New immigrants have become the fifth developing group in Taiwan, making the issue of how these females deal with their marriages an important issue in Taiwan. This study aims at exploring the motives and expectations of these southeastern Asian female immigrants when they come to Taiwan to get married to the locals, understanding the problems these women encounter in their married life here, and analyzing how they handle and adapt to the situation in which their marriages face problems. The goal is to construct a process showing how the new immigrated females face various issues in their marriages. This study is a qualitative research and adopts in-depth interviews as the research methods to collect data. The study subjects are 14 southeastern new immigrated females in Taoyuan area. Their nationalities cover Vietnamese, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and Cambodia. The results of this study revealed that the motive for inter-cultural marriages is a result of the independent choice of these females. When they face marital problems, these foreign brides recognize Taiwan and work hard as “Taiwanese daughter-in-laws.” In terms of their expectation of marriages, the new immigrated females have a practical attitude of hoping their marriages to “go smoothly” and their marriages can be divided into three types: communicative families, nervous families and confrontational families. This study has suggested that the new immigrated females and their spouses to accept more complete pre-marital consultation and education. Moreover, marriage consultation courses should be offered to these subjects. In addition, the government and the private sector should establish a marriage consultation channel for these females and provide them with the opportunities to study further and protect their work rights. A final reminder is that this study is regional and further quotation should be aware of this characteristic.
