A New Addition to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum: A Preliminary Study of Educational Curation in TFAM Children's Art Education Center

The three public Art museums in Taiwan, Taipei Fine Arts Museum (a.k.a. TFAM), National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Kaohsiung Museum of Arts were widely regarded as quiet and serene spaces in the past. Yet, these museums are full of laughter and joy in their children’s art education centers nowadays. With the carefree atmosphere, the doors of the museums are much more open. In addition to embracing the young audience, people with or without fewer professional arts backgrounds are attracted by children’s art education centers. Moreover, some art professionals are particularly fond of these spaces. I believe that with the influences of the developing the educational philosophy and the neoliberal environment, the core value of the curatorial departments in museums in recent years has been transferred from the ‘‘object’’ to the ‘‘audience’’. This change has bridged the gap between the artworks and the audience. In order to implement well the promotion of arts, we have to take good care of the closeness between the exhibition and the audience. And, this is especially true and important toward the exhibitions which are aimed at art education of children. The aim of this study is to explore the content and the educational practice of the educational curation of the ‘‘Children’s Art Education Center’’, established in TFAM in 2014. The mainly research methods of this study includes literature review, participant observation, in-depth interview and visitor studies. Through the literature reviews, I have looked into the motivation of the establishment and the evolution of the center. Moreover, I try to sort out the status changes of ‘‘exhibition’’ and ‘‘education’’ in the museum operation these years. Then through the in-depth interviews with the educators of TFAM, I realized the process of the center's educational exhibition and its three major curatorial beliefs. I also carried out a visitor study on the exhibition ‘‘Small or Big’’ and found that the center could use "education" as an external communication medium to open more dialogues between the audience and the works of art. From the audience's response, I learned about the attractive elements of the center, as well as the pros and cons of its curation. The study also proposes some suggestions on the importance of audience research from the discovery of the research practice, which is expected to be the reference for future research.
