Investigation of Conference Interpreter Work Stress and Needs

Abstract Job stress has been studied through an overwhelming number of studies in occupational health science. However, in Taiwan the number of studies on conference interpretation is few in number, the number is even less for those that analyze word stress of conference interpreters using Karasek & Theorell’s JDCS Model. The aim of the study includes the following: (a) use the dimensions of Karasek and Theorell’s Job-Demand-Control-Support Model, along with Dean & Pollard’s Environmental-Interpersonal-Paralinguistic-Intrapersonal (EIPI) demands framework to explain perceived work stress among conference interpreters, (b) apply the frameworks through case studies to see if the model can sufficiently define work stress in conference interpreting, (c) the researcher hopes the study’s findings can yield effective suggestions to improve interpreters working conditions. Methods: The study uses qualitative interviews and questionnaire on 5 conference interpreters, 1 Professional Conference Organizer and 1 delegate to gather data for subsequent analysis. Expected Results: The study’s findings should not only comply with the frameworks but also effectively discover the needs, challenges of interpreters as well as suggestions for improvements. In addition the study wishes to include inputs from interpreters as well as users of interpreting services to create win-win-win scenario. Conclusion: There is evidence that interpreter work stress is closely intertwined with interpreter coping resources and control in various forms of dynamic combinations. Keywords: Conference interpreter; work demands; work stress; JDCS Model; coping strategy; EIPI
