Under the fierce competitive environments, the differences between the products from different manufacturing firms will decline and the life cycle of products will become shorter. Consequently, firms will dependent on their superior services, quality, deadline and innovations to strive for the competitive advantage. The quality competition plays an important role in manufacturing industry, and necessary for product competition. Consequently, if we don’t have good quality, we would not have any advantages to compete with others. Especially after entering WTO, we should watch out for quality of domestic industry to compete with other enterprises in the global. The study extends Ahire and Dreyfus (2000) and is through a study of quality practices in manufacturing plants form multiple industries. With LISREL, we empirically demonstrate that both design and process management efforts have positive impact on internal quality and external quality. The empirical evidence of the study reveals: The model fitness index shows that entire model fitness is appropriate. We empirically demonstrate that both design and process management efforts have positive impact on internal quality such as scrap、rework、defects、performance, and external quality outcomes such as complaints, warranty, litigation, market share. Process management would have more influence on external quality if we pay more attention to internal quality. Therefore, the more importance we place on design and process management, the effect of internal and external quality would be better. These findings indicate that, to attain superior quality outcomes, firms need to balance their design and process management efforts.
