The optical disc drive (ODD) becomes one of important components in a personal computer nowadays. Industry commonly utilizes spindle motors in the types of brushless DC motor to power CD-ROMs for data-reading. In terms of control performance, stability and power for a small spindle, the brushless DC motor is a better choice over other driving electromagnetic mechanisms. In most speed-control mechanisms, Hall sensors play important roles to provide current speed signal for spindle speed regulation of the DC motor. It is well known, however, that the performances of the Hall sensors are sensitive to temperature change, leading to measuring error of the feedback speed signal. This study aims to solve the aforementioned problem by developing a sliding-mode observer to estimate current rotational speed of the spindle based on input voltages and currents to the motor. Experimental study is initiated to verify the theory of sliding-mode observer, where Labview and current sensors by LEM are utilized to accomplish the validation.
