Game modding or mods, originally “game modification”, has had a great impact on gameplay, and has brought variety of new features to players. Based on the “encoding-decoding” theory of Stuart Hall, this study brings up “re-encoding” as a key notion for game modders. This study conducted several in-depth interviews and did textual analysis by recruiting interviewees and collecting mod texts from the website of “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim”. The study attempts to categorize the types of mods, and to explore the relationships between game modders’ reading position and modding position. Lastly, this study attempts to extend the structure of “ergodic literature”. The research results suggest six types of mods, including: “destructive cheating mods”, “conditional cheating mods”, “improving overhauling mods”, “expansive overhauling mods”, “stretching creative mods” and “disruptive creative mods”. Regarding the ergodic literature, game mods are capable of extending the original texts to various degrees, but they also diffuse and diverge the original meanings of the source game texts. The results also demonstrate that the attitudes and social norms within the game community can exert great influence on the types of game modding creations.
