Along with the gradual opening up of the concept of preserving historical architecture, colonial Japanese official residences in various places in Taiwan began to attract attention. Research on these former official residences not only has academic value, but the adaptive re-use of these spaces also has an applicable value for society. Nevertheless, before adaptive re-use of space can take place, the important precursory work of restoring the architecture must also be addressed. Consequently, research and papers examining the architectural restoration of colonial Japanese official residences have been receiving increasing amounts of attention. This study primarily explores the restoration processes and techniques used on residences constructed of wood for officials during the Japanese colonial period, with the aim of effectively restoring and preserving historical buildings and increasing their value for adaptive re-use purposes. The survey portion of this case study conducts a field observation to make a record which primarily focuses on No. 2 Shengyi Alley, No. 79 Qingdao Street, and No. 1 Qingying Alley. The research results include a discussion on the restoration processes and techniques used on the structural systems, foundations, walls, roof trusses, and roofs of the wooden buildings. Restoration principles include: 1) Highlight the special architectural features: Preserve the original components and rebuild according to the original appearance. 2) Repair the old like the old: In principle, repair according to the original appearance so as not to effect the original structural make-up and/or spacial atmosphere. 3) Preserve old materials: Replicate the original structural appearance and, whenever possible, preserve the architectural materials and authenticity of the structure, using the principle of repairing the old like the old. 4) Strengthen the original structure: When designing the restoration, incorporate modern techniques and materials to prevent the reappearance of weak points. 5) Strengthen pest control systems: If the original components are still usable, it is recommended that “the surface of existing wood components undergo spray treatment”; if new materials are replacing old ones, it is recommended to conduct pest treatments and conduct periodic reviews.
