台灣高中職學生的英文閱讀策略之研究

摘要


傳統的英文課程裡,閱讀被視為最重要的技能(Susser & Rob, 1990)。近幾十年有關於英文閱讀的研究中,亦皆強調閱讀策略的重要性。學習者應該善加運用閱讀策略去計劃如何閱讀以增進閱讀理解 (Poole, 2010)。然而,台灣的高中職學校學生多數缺乏使用英文閱讀策略的知識,因此很少運用這些策略在英文閱讀理解中。殊不知,有效的使用英文閱讀策略去思考如何閱讀英文文章確實可增進自己的英文閱讀理解能力。本研究主要目的在探討台灣高中職生使用英文閱讀策略之概況,並依據個人的背景因素分析英文閱讀策略使用的情況。本研究採用問卷調查法,利用層級抽樣方式抽取研究對象。研究對象來自全台灣北、中、南、東,共18間高中和17間高職學校,合計為35間高中職學校,共計1,259位學生。研究結果顯示台灣高中職生在使用英文閱讀策略的頻率最高。女性高中職生在使用英文閱讀策略的頻率高於男性高中職生。電子電機群(電機組)的高職生和公立高中生使用英文閱讀策略的頻率最高。來自中部的高中職生在使用英文閱讀策略的頻率高於來自北部、南部及東部的高中職生。這些研究結果在英文閱讀學習的過程中,英文閱讀策略扮演著重要的角色。透過本研究的貢獻,可初步瞭解台灣高中職生使用英文閱讀策略的概況。

In the traditional English Language classroom, reading is the skill that receives the most emphasis (Susser & Rob, 1990). One of the key findings in the last several decades of reading research is the importance of reading strategies. Learners should use reading strategies to plan how to read and enhance their reading comprehension (Poole, 2010). However, English as a foreign language (EFL) reading strategies are rarely used by Taiwanese English Language Learners (ELLs) in high schools due to a lack of knowledge of strategies for English reading comprehension. Such learners need help in learning how to employ effective strategies to support reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of EFL reading strategies in Taiwanese ELLs in high schools, and to differentiate EFL reading strategy uses in terms of their background characteristics. The participants were 1,259 students from eighteen general and seventeen vocational high schools from northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan. The Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) was used to collect data on reading strategy uses among high school English Language Learners (ELLs). The results showed that Taiwanese high-school age ELLs use reading strategies frequently. In this study, female students used EFL reading strategies significantly more often than male students. Vocational high school students majoring in Electrical and Electronic (Motor Type) and public general high school students most often used reading strategies overall. High school students from central Taiwan used EFL reading strategies with the highest frequency. These results suggest that EFL reading strategies play an important role in the process and performance of reading. The findings of this study contribute to a better understanding of the use of EFL reading strategies by high school students in Taiwan. Implications for the use of EFL reading strategies are discussed. In addition, the differences in strategy use identified in this research suggest areas for further investigation.
