BACKGROUND: Unlike oral medication, the effectiveness of local treatment for acute tonsillitis is still controversial. Therefore, a clinical trial was conducted to determine the effectiveness of local treatment in patient with acute tonsillitis. METHODS: Between January 2001 and December 2001, patients with acute tonsillitis were enrolled in this prospective, randomized study. Those with odd chart numbers (n=49) were selected as the treatment group, receiving both oral medicine and local treatment. Those with even-numbered charts (n=45) were selected as the controls and received only the oral medication. All of the patients were then interviewed by phone or in person three and seven days after their treatment, respectively. The times required to achieve post-treatment symptom relief were then compared for two groups. RESULTS: For most symptoms, such as sore throat, fever, chills, malaise and cough, post-treatment symptom relief for the treatment group was significantly more rapid than that for the controls (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Local treatment is definitely effective as a therapeutic adjunct for relief of symptoms in patient with acute tonsillitis.
