The purpose of current study was to investigate the effect of oral vitamin C supplementation on swimming performance under two different training periods with high-(before competition) or low-intensity (off-season). Twenty first-tier college swimmers participated in this study and a daily 500 mg of vitamin C was orally ingested 30 mm before training in both periods. We measured the 400-m swimming performance, post-exercise lactate level, and heart rate recovery following 3-min step test before and after vitamin C supplementation. In the high-intensity training period, vitamin C supplementation significantly lowered post-exercise lactate level and improved heart rate recovery following step test and 400-m swimming performance. In the lowintensity period, despite that vitamin C supplementation lowered the post-exercise lactate level, there was no improvement in heart rate recovery following 3-min step test and swimming performance. In conclusion, we found that vitamin C supplementation can improve swimming performance only when training was intensive.
