A Case of Acute Infectious Lymphocytosis

A case of acute infectious lymphocytosis in a 7-year-old Chinese girl, native of Taiwan is presented. The patient was brought to our hospital on April 2, 1963, because of abdominal colicky pain for 2 days. Physical examination revealed nothing particular. The white blood cell conut on the 2nd illness day showed 69,800 per cubic milimeter, with 76 per cent lymphocytes. The maximum white blood cell count was 94,300 per cubic milimeter, with 66 per cent lymphocytes on the 9th illness day. The hyperleucocytosis with lymphocytosis persisted for one month. Heterophile agglutination reaction revealed negative. The child was asymptomatic except intermittent abdominal colicky pain at the onset of the disease over a period of 4 days and occasional mild abdominal pain localized at the umbilical region throughout the entire course. These pains subsided completely without any specific treatment within one month.
Brief review of the literature as to the etiology, clinical findings, laboratory findings and diagnosis of infectious lymphocytosis is made.
