Chinese Abstract

Objective To investigate the characteristics of antibiotic associated diarrhea (AAD) in elderly patients. Methods 165 cases of diarrhea in hospital were divided into two groups elder group (n=124) and younger group (n=41), recording the character of diarrhea (frequency and symptoms, etc) and routine test culture of faeces. The kind and dosage of antibiotics used before diarrhea were also recorded. Results ① Clinical manifestations in most of the cases present with watery or mucus stool. The cases with frequent diarrhea above 10 times/day in the elder were more than the younger with earlier occurence, longer duration fever and abdominal symptoms; ② There was no special finding in routine test and culture of faeces, fungi were more found in elder group; ③ The main antibiotics caused AAD was cefox. More than half of the cases were due to preventive drugs Conclusions It is easy that AAD occurs in the elder after antibiotic was used, with persistence duration and more frequency of stool. It is important to control the use of wide spectrum antibiotics.
