Patient safety is one of the most important issues recently. Researches show there are highly correlated relationships between patient safety and nurse staffing. However, more staffing means higher cost. Facing the changing world, OR managers need to learn more about nurse staffing. For the article, we have reviewed relative papers, present factors affect staffing concerns and introduced an staffing estimate method published by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN). It is suggested that there are needs to consider both direct and indirect workload and the increasing trends of patient number and patient acuity. Besides, OR managers have to find ways to accommodate a variety of specialties according to the characteristics of OR staffs. Finally, staffing plan and strategies should be re-examined periodically to match the patient needs.
