The yellow stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker)), striped rice borer (Chilo suppressalis (Walker)) and pink borer (Sesamia inferens (Walker» are the common insect pests of rice in Taiwan. However, the prevalence of each species of these rice borers are variable according to the changes of cultural system and cultural practice of rice in Taiwan. Therefore, it is important to survey the variation of infestations among the three species, with especially after great reducing the cultivated acreages of rice, sugarcane as well as com and other cereal crops since the years of 1990. Based on the infested tiller of rice in farmer's fields in Changhua and Chiayi prefecture from 2004 to 2006, and the light trap catches of the stem borers from 1992 to 2007, it indicated that the striped rice borer remains the dominant species in the first cropping season in Changhua prefecture. In Chiayi prefecture, though the light trap catches of striped rice borer was higher than the pink borer, but the ratio of infested tiller by pink borer in the investigated paddy fields were mostly higher than that of striped rice borer. However, the pink borer in the second cropping season was a prevailing species in both Changhua and Chiayi no matter what sampling measures used. The yellow stem borer was not recorded at present investigation. This result reveals that the pink borer, which was considered as a secondary pest of rice in the past, has tended to becoming more important than striped borer in central Taiwan, especially in the second cropping season. More studies on the bionomics and control measures of this borer species are urgently needed.
