Floquet Formalism Applied to Quadrupolar Nuclear Spins in Rotating Solids

Quantum Floquet theory, combined with a perturbation expansion method and appropriate canonical transformations, is used to elucidate the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of solid state quadrupolar nuclear spin systems undergoing sample rotations. The general theoretical framework is formulated and the versatility of the theory demonstrated for a variety of quadrupolar nuclear spin systems. The results may be used to treat various types of NMR studies involving quadrupolar nuclei, including single pulse and magic-angle spinning (MAS), spin-locking, cross polarization, spectral spin diffusion, multi-quantum coherence and heteronuclear correlation experiments. This treatment is found to be computationally efficient, particularly at long evolution times, and its approximate analytical solutions are significantly helpful in disclosing physical insights concerning the diverse spectral phenomena exhibited by rotating quadrupolar nuclear spin systems.
