Located in the northern piedmont of the central Tianshan Mountains and the southern marginal zone of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, the Hutubi River Basin (43°07'~45°20'N, 86°05'~87°08'E) is 258km in length from south to north and 40km in average width from east to west, its catchment area is 1.02×10^4 km^2, and its extent accords basically with the administrative division of Hutubi County. The terrain of the Hutubi River Basin is high in the south and low in the north, the basin is sloped northwestward, the elevation of the highest boundary peak between the southwestern part of the basin and the Manas River Basin is 5292m a. s. l., it is only 360m a. s. l. at the lowest place in the north desert, and the elevation difference in the basin is as high as about 5000m. From the headwaters to the lower reaches, the basin can be divided into 4 geographical units, i.e., the mountainous region, hilly region, alluvial-diluvial fans and alluvial-diluvial plain. The Hutubi River is the second largest river in the north piemont of the Tianshan Mountains, it has 30 tributaries, among them 10 tributaries rise in the alpine zone perennially covered by glaciers and snow, where 239 modern glaciers with a total glacier area of 72.07km^2 and an ice storage of 2.353km^3 are developed, and the annual glacier-snow melt water volume is 5.24×10^7 m^3, which is one of the stable sources of stream water recharge. In this paper, the hydrological characteristics in the Hutubi River Basin are analyzed from aspects of climate change, annual and seasonal runoff volumes, annual and seasonal total silt discharges, water quality, etc. based on the multi-year statistical data. The results are as follows: (1) The variation of the annual runoff volume of the Hutubi River is not so significant, its Cv value varies in a range of 0.13~0.16 only, the ratio between the maximum and minimum annual runoff volumes is about 2.0, and the stable recharge of the river is advantageous for utilizing water resources. However, the seasonal distribution of runoff volume is asymmetrical, for example, the proportion of summer inflow of the river occuies 80% of the annual one. (2) The flood peak and floodwater volume of the Hutubi River are high, the flood duration is long, and the fllood disasters in the irrigated area at its lower reaches become more and more serious, which should be paid great attention to. (3) Water quality is good upstream from the debouchure, but it is deteriorated downstream from the debouchure due to human activities.
