English Abstract

Objective: To explore the feasibility of indirectly analyzing population disease pattern using inpatient categorization, and to raise strategies of disease prevention and control. Methods: The disease category annual report in hospitals at county and higher levels in Jiangsu Province in 2001 was collected, and the disease categorization and the relevant total bed-day occupancy were analyzed. Results: There is a very similar trend of disease pattern between inpatient and population death; non-communicable disease (NCD) takes the major part of total inpatients in both rural and urban hospitals, and the proportion of bed-day occupancy is relatively higher; injuries have led more bed-day occupancy than the total of infectious and maternal diseases have. And the proportion of bed- days for injuries is higher in rural hospitals. Conclusion: It is feasible using inpatient disease pattern to indicate population health problems, and under some conditions, it is more significant. Some outstanding health problems to people in developing countries, such as infectious disease maternal health problems, still exist in China and couldn't be ignored. Both urban and rural areas should emphasize injury prevention.
