Geographers stress the concept of ”place”, and discuss the interactions between humans and the environment from the perspective of ”sense of place”. Sense of place plays an important role in geographical development, and it also can be clarified by the three viewpoints: phenomenology, structuration and globalization. Sense of place refers to subjective attitudes towards the environment, and can be combined with personal experience and daily life. Sense of place is also involved with environment, cultural context, and social relationships, and thus affects perceptions of the outside world. This investigation adopts the case of Lion's Head Mountain, located between Hsinchu and Miaoli, to examine the sense of place of local residents in relation to tourism development. This investigation employs the qualitative method, together with in-depth interviews and participant observation, to record resident daily life and sense of place. Three research findings and conclusions are reached, as follows: First, location brings a ”sacred space” to local residents as a shared experience. Second, sense of place differs between social groups and living areas. Third, differences in sense of place create different attitudes towards place development.
