This study was conducted to investigate the differences between nurses from an infection and a non-infention unit in AJDS/HIV-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices of precautions (K.A.P.), and to study the potential factors that affected these nurses’K.A.P. Data was collected by using a questionnaire which was made available to 38 anonymous, voluntary nurses from an infection unit and a non-infection unit in a medical center selected by purposive and random sampling. Results of this study showed that in general nurses from the infection unit got significantly higher scores on knowledge, had more positive attitudes, and took better care of precautions practice in AIDS/HIV than those from non-infection unit. Nurses who had participated in AIDS/HIV workshops obtained higher AIDS/HIV knowledge scores. Those nurses who were single, from the unit which provided protective equipment more adequately, had experiences in taking care of AIDS/HIV(+) patients, had participated in AIDS/HIV workshops, and had higher percentile in “Responsibility”, “Cautiousness”, and “Original thinking” on Gordon Personal Inventory displayed more positive attitudes pertaining to AIDS/HIV; nurses who had been to training programs, were from the unit which provided protective equipment more adequately, and had higher precentile in “Emotional stability” applied precautions in practice more appropriately. For increasing nurses’ capability of taking care of AIDS/HIV(+) patients, and to protect nurses from HIV infection, (1) workshops and training programs should be offered primarily as continuing education, and the shifts must be scheduled flexibly for nurses to get more chance to participate; (2) copies of current professional journal articles should be promulgated in the units and unit-based lectures should be given regularly (3) units should provide protective equipment handily; and (4) new staff should be assigned to suitable units according to their character or personality, or provided counseling if necessary.
