The paper is mainly an account of the general development of the academic libraries in Taiwan with the focus on the university and college libraries during the periods from the Ching Dynasty to the present. The contents cover the said development after the ceding of Taiwan to Japan by the Manchu government in l895 under the Treaty of Shimonoseki because of the defeat in the Sino-Japanese War that year, the evolution of the higher education and the installations of libraries in Taiwan during the Japanese-occupied period from l895 to l945 and the state-of- art of the university and college libraries in Taiwan up to 2005 since the retrocession of Taiwan from Japan in l945. Besides, there is an exposition regarding the formulations of the library law and the library management standards, the library organizations and functions, the library collections development, the readers' service, the library automation and network developments, etc.. And finally, the paper points out the pivotal factors that have influenced the academic libraries in Taiwan for the past century and indicates the hopeful prospect for the future development of academic libraries in Taiwan.
