English Abstract

Girls tend to alienate from public sports and recreational space. Fear of violence after dark makes girls feel unsafe and further constrains their spatial and recreational choices. The study explored the reasons and consequences of adolescent girls' choices toward recreational space after dark. The study population was 10th and 11th grade girls of two Hualien senior high schools. James and Embrey's (2001) survey instrument was employed. Data were collected by January 2004, obtaining 437 usable questionnaires. Analyzing qualitative and quantitative data indicated that only few respondents recreated after dark. Most respondents perceived bedrooms as safest and their major leisure site where they did mostly passive activities. The respondents perceived open spaces as parks and male-dominated spaces as internet café unsafe. On the contrary, well-lit and people-filled spaces such as fast food restaurants, shopping centers, and local teahouses were perceived safe. A conceptual framework for adolescent girls' recreational space after dark was emerged. The framework indicted that internal and external factors influenced their recreation space choices after dark. Three types of girls were identified: going out with no fear, going out only precautions taken, and staying home. Recommendations were made to practice and future research.
