The purpose of this research was to evaluate the thermal properties and decay and termite resistance of chemically modified wood. The wood was chemically modified by reacting it with a combination of boric acid and aliphatic amines(propylamine, butylamine, hexylamine, and octylamine) and boric acid and aromatic amines(aniline, p-toludine, p-anisidine, and 4-nitroanoline). Results indicate that treating wood with boric acid and amines did not significantly improve its fire retardancy. Wood samples treated with boric acid/octylamine, boric acid/p-anisidine, and boric acid/4-nitroaniline were very resistant to decay fungi. Wood samples treated with boric acid/octylamine and boric acid/all 4 aromatic amine combinations were also very resistant to termites. Wood treated with boric acid/aliphatic amines. Wood treated with boric acid/aliphatic amine combinations resulted in less wood discoloration than that produced by with boric acid/aromatic amine treatments.
