A Study on the Effect of a Scenario- Based Communication Course on Communication Ability of Nurses

並列摘要

Purpose: This study was intended to evaluate the effectiveness of a scenario-based communication course in improving nurses' communication ability. Methods: This was a two-group pretest and posttest nonequivalent quasi-experimental design in 2010 involving a total of 118 nurses. The Communication Performance Checklist (CPC) was used to examine the post-course learning outcome of the nurses. Inferential statistics analysis was performed using Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, Sing Test, McNemar Test, and regression. Results: The study findings indicated significant differences between the subjects' self-assessment scores and standardized patients' assessment scores at pretest and posttest, and posttest scores were significantly higher than pretest scores (p≤0.001), indicating that the communication course enhanced communication ability of the subjects. The standardized patients' mean scores for communication ability for the experimental group were significantly different from the mean scores for the control group (p≤0.001), and this model could account for 48.7% of variance in standardized patients' assessment of the subjects' communication ability. Conclusion: The study results showed that the course was a useful pre-service training course for nurses to practice effective communication towards improving the quality of nursing care. In addition, the Standardized Patient-Evaluation Communication Performance Checklist (SPECPC) is a highly objective assessment instrument which is especially useful in assessing communication which involves interactions between humans.
