The Application of Microteaching to Improve Teaching Skill in Medical School

Purpose: In order to improve the teaching skill in lecturing in medical school, microteaching was specially applied. Teachers giving lectures to medical students were recorded and the video clips were sent to both education specialist and content specialist for evaluation. Based on the criteria of microteaching evaluation, scale analysis was carried out to provide feedback to clinical and basic medicine teachers. Method: Evaluation was based on the criteria in Zhang’s 2006 Classroom Instruction Observation Form which includes five categories: mastery of topic materials, presenting teaching materials articulately, flexibility of instructional strategies, effective class management, and sound communication skills. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS/Win 13.0 and qualitative data analysis was performed using Nvivo 8.0. Result: There were 31 teachers (23 male and 8 female) in the College of Medicine participated in microteaching, in which ages 41-50 had the greatest numbers of participants (51.6%). Mastering teaching content (2.7 SD 0.5) and well order of the class (2.7 SD 0.5) had the highest mean. The lowest mean were thought-provoking (1.6 SD 0.7) and taking care of the majority of students with eye contact or movement in the classroom (1.6 SD 0.7). The elder age group performed better in microteaching evaluation than the younger age group in most of the items. Conclusion: Most of the faculties in medical school using lecture as the major teaching method. Microteaching is an effective method to improve teaching skill in the classroom. Among the five categories of teaching assessment, faculty development should focus on the flexibility of instructional strategies and communication skill in teaching. Other teaching strategies such as problem based learning (PBL) or team based learning (TBL) have been introduced in Taiwan and should be encouraged to use more frequently to increase the effectiveness of teaching.
