The recovery process of a spinal cord injury survivor encompasses many unspoken difficulties. This study adopted an action research approach, and explored the difficulties associated with bowel inertia of 6 spinal cord injury survivors at Taoyuan County Potential Development Center for Spinal Cord Sufferers. Through a collaborative inquiry process, the bowel inertia of spinal cord injury survivors was de-contextualized; it was brought back to its original state as it appeared in life, and was reorganized through writing to be communicated with others. In addition, the differences between the medical system and the Potential Development Center for Spinal Cord Sufferers are discussed. The collaborative inquiry process helped the author maintain a firm collaborative relationship with the spinal cord injury survivor group, and demonstrated the importance of an independent development of knowledge in spinal cord injury support groups.
