Due to the ability to eat golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata), which damaged aquatic crops, the brown duck can be used to control the population of golden apple snail in the Zizaniz latifolia field. In this study we examined the prey efficiency of brown duck serve as a biological control for the golden apple snail and the profit for the Zizaniz latifolia yields. According to our observation, 1-month old and 14-month old brown duck could eat 49 and 142 golden apple snails, at shell heights from 1.0 to 1.25 cm, respectively, per day. But at the same time, they could not eat golden apple snails bigger than 1.25 cm and 2.25 cm in shell heights any more, respectively. After 30 days and 90 days of brown duck releasing in the field, the number of egg masses of the golden apple snail were decreased to 21 and 11%, as compared to the control, respectively. The amount of buds emergency in the brown duck released treatment were 46% more than that of the control treatment, as well as 38.5% higher in the yields, and a better quality in the harvested materials. These results also suggested that brown duck was more effective in controlling the golden apple snail than chemicals in the Zizaniz latifolia field.
