English Abstract

Given the escalating demand for drug abuse treatment, it is vital to assess the quality of such treatment. This study was designed to examine the quality of drug abuse treatment by comparing patient’s satisfaction with treatment in hospital-based and Christian residential treatment programs in Taiwan. Patients were receiving treatment in hospitals (n=133) and in Christian Abstinence Centers (n=53). Data on the patients’ sociodemographic characteristics, life satisfaction, duration of drug use, attitude toward drug abuse, and willingness to undergo treatment were recorded. Their satisfaction with the treatment received was measured on the day before the discharge using the “Treatment Satisfaction Scale”. The internal consistency of this scale is 0.84. Responses to questions were scored on a five-point Likert scale. Patients who were treated in the Christian programs were inclined to be more satisfied with the treatment. Both the hospitalized patients and those interviewed in the Christian facilities described that they felt imprisoned, that they had no place to be alone, and were in a bad mood because of the dull atmosphere. Their attitude toward drug abuse significantly affected their satisfaction with the treatment received. Improvements to the physical environment and atmosphere should be made by institutions treating drug abuse, especially hospitals.
