Since past research has examined the differences between expert and novice shooters, and intrapersonal best and worst performance, few studies have focused on the differences between executed and rejected trials that may shed light on the mental associated with optimal performance. Purpose: To examine the differences in frontal EEG between executed and rejected shots during the preparatory period. Method: Twenty-four expert pistol shooters were recruited as participants. Data of six shooters, whose rejection trials had reached the criteria of over 6 out of 30 shots, were further analyzed. EEG from the frontal region (F7, F3, Fz, F4, and F8) was assessed, and theta (4-7 Hz) frequency bands were derived between the executed and rejected shots. EEG data were segmented into three one-second epochs prior to execution or rejection. Several 2 x 3 x 5 (trial type x epoch x electrode) ANOVAs with repeated measures were employed on each frequency bands separately. Results: Compared with the rejected shots, the executed shots revealed larger theta power in the right frontal area 3 seconds prior to triggering. Conclusion: In executed shots, higher theta power in the right frontal area infers that the proficiency in distance estimate and aiming movement for the experienced shooters. They invest more attentional effort to visual-spatial coordination while executing a shot.
