The Historical Evolution about the Image of Chaishan: Based on Taiwanese Classic Poetry

The most famous mountain in Kaohsiung is Chaishan, also called Shoushan, Ape Hill, Gushan, Mt. Takao, and Maijinshan (the Gold-Hidden-Mountain). There are many poems associated with this mountain. During Ching empire occupation era, the poems described the peacefulness and pro-sea characteristics. During Japanese ruling, the Kaohsiung Shrine was built and the crown prince of Japan (later Emperor Akihito) also visited here, therefore Chaishan enjoyed greater and greater popularity and there were more and more poems about it. That is the reason why many poems represented the sacred images in that time. During early post-war period, many of the classic poetry about Chaishan were affected by Chiang Kai-shek regime to display slogans of counterattack and regaining control over Chinese mainland, but ”The Song of Shoushan” written by Lin Yu Shu stilll expressed the philosophical thinking about the unchangeableness of Chaishan and the variation of Taiwanese society. The interaction between Chaishan and Taiwanese will continue perpetually.
