Drug addicts have a negative effect on their physical and mental function, suffer from various diseases and need more medical resources. First line therapy for heroin addiction is Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT). After the last dose, heroin (Opiate) withdrawal symptoms experience for a week. However, methadone (Opiate-like) withdrawal symptoms last for several weeks and may be a risk of mental illness and a decline in quality of life. This retrospective study in the Department of Chinese Medicine, Taipei City Hospital, Linsen Chinese Medicine and Kunming Branch analyzes a group of heroin addicts in an intervention of methadone maintenance treatment coupled with traditional chinese medication to evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of tradional chinese medication on beliefs about drug abuse and life adjustment. Based on the results of this study, the average drug use, average decrease, and attendance rate of Methadone in patients with drug addiction that has been treated for more than 6 times in traditional Chinese medicine are indeed significantly different from those in drug addicts who have been treated for less than six times. Chinese medicine treatment is beneficial for drug addicts to reduce dependence on Methadone.
