A Study of Recognition and Identification of Rail Transportation Signs in Southern, Central and Northern Taiwan

Rail transportation signs present some specific figure or simple words that are located at the proper place. They are used for instructing passengers concerning destination, convenience and safety. The transmition of the visual information of the rail transportation sign must not only he correct, but it should he also he able to attract passengers' concentration. And, it needs to have simple and easy-to-understand meaning. The purpose of this study is to propose an investigation into rail transportation signs. The study wishes to collect rail symbol signs from southern, central and northern areas, then analyze them by way of questionnaire-making use of a confusion matrix to conclude the signs with poorer discrimination. There are two signs not reaching a mandatory 67% level which have been proposed by the ISO. One is the elevator (The picture is abbreviated) at 64.8%, and another one is the ticket office (The picture is abbreviated) at 63.2%. This research is focused upon the improvement of these two signs, using an hypothesis test and analysis of variance to prove that correct recognition has been enhanced obviously. And, it is hoped that correct recognition can provide an example for guidance to the sponsoring organization. In addition, the study wishes to bring consistency to the symbol signs inside the railway stations of southern, central and northern areas of Taiwan-which appeared to be inconsistent, in each area, after investigation .So we suggest that, the signs should follow a standard system, in order that the symbols will lead to the best affect upon recognition.
