Purposes: Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS) has been used to measure healthcare staff perception of patient safety in several countries. This survey has yet to be validated in Taiwan. This study was designed to examine the underlying dimensions and psychometric properties of HSOPS in Department of Health (DOH)-affiliated hospitals in Taiwan and to compare these results with the original questionnaire used in US hospital settings. Methods: Researchers used a structured questionnaire to collect data from nurses employed at three public hospitals. Two-hundred and seven (52%) valid questionnaires were registered and analyzed for sample homogeneity and common method variance.Confirmatory factor analysis ensured data reliability and validity. Results: Internal consistency of the three domains was low (CR< .6). Discriminant validity is given when the average extracted variance of a factor is greater than the highest squared inter-correlation with any other model factor. Model fit was satisfactory for the twelve domains and the safety culture in terms of the structural equation models. Conclusions: Acceptable results were achieved for the underlying dimensions and psychometric properties of the HSOPS. The authors recommend that additional studies be done to confirm the feasibility of using HSOPS in Taiwan.
