English Abstract

Land subsidence is the one of the most serious geological hazards on the Beijing Plain. The plain covers an area of more than 4000 km2 and has several centers of subsidence that may affect the safe and comfortable passage of high-speed trains. A case study is made of the Beijing-Tianjin high-speed railway, on which trains achieve a top speed of 350 km/h. The study analyzes the occurrence of land subsidence along the railway, the characteristics of the differential subsidence, and the variation in gradient for a ifve-year period during which the railway was operating. The results show that the amount of differential subsidence caused by regional subsidence has increased, but the changes in slope caused by the subsidence stil lie within the guidelines of the design requirements for high-speed rail. Using the design index with the line use ifxed at 100 years, and based on the 2013 rate of subsidence and the 2008-2013 average rate of subsidence, the maximum line gradient change due to differential subsidence is estimated at about 3‰, which is far less than the 20‰. design threshold. However, the cumulative amount of subsidence should stil be regarded as potential y affecting the maintenance and safe operation of the line. Therefore, measures should be taken to ensure the effective prevention and control of land subsidence in order to reduce as far as possible the rate of change in gradient of the high-speed railway.
