Workplace Romances and Organizational Climate

This paper aims to discuss the relations between workplace romance and the theory of organizational climate with a view to further analyzing the impact of various organization climates on the emergence of workplace romance. Robert E. Quinn, the author of the first widely cited research on workplace romance, defined organizational romance as a relationship between two members of the same organization that entails mutual attraction which results in a romantic relationship among co-workers or between employers and their subordinates. The emergence of a romantic relationship at the workplace is mainly attributable to the mixed effect of time and space. Organizational climate, a psychological life space, is referred to as individuals' perception of the impact of environment on their own well-being. The cross-culture research conducted by Mano and Gabriel proposed how three types of organizational climates - hot, cold and temperate - influence the emergence of workplace romance. The development of cold, hot and temperate climates is subject to several factors, including workplace aestheticization, work arrangements and working hours, performance indicators and interactions among members in the organization, organization policy as well as the organization culture. According to the research, workplace romances are more likely to become embedded in organizations characterized by hot climates.
