The Great Gatsby is a novel written by American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald. Published in 1925, the story follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. Up until the present time, there have been more than 27 Chinese translations of The Great Gatsby, yet many of which are found with multiple mistranslations and low readability. Thus, this present thesis chooses to revisit two translations of The Great Gatsby, one by a male translator, George Kao, and the other by a female translator, Zhang Qirong, hoping to reveal how gender serves as crucial paratexual element during translation activity, and observe how the translators’ gender ideologies are shaped through language use. Textual analysis suggests that Zhang not only attempts to make the female characters more visible and vividly portrayed in her translation, but also feminizes the male characters to reduce the force in their speech and actions. Kao’s alteration includes demonstrating his deep-rooted ideology of male supremacy through his word choice and additions to his translation, as well as revealing his gender stereotype towards female characters by reinforcing their negative descriptions. In short, two translators both express their gender ideology through “voicing” themselves in the translations. If it is inevitable for the translators to be present in the translation, it is perhaps worth deliberation to consider whether or not translators should strike a balance between expressing their ideology and suppressing the original voice.
