Abstract The main purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and effects of laughing program in a 4-week Body-Mind-Spirit Empowerment Group (BMSEG) with female adults. This research also examined the essential content, applied value, merits, and shortcomings of the laughing activity. Eight adult females, who had slight to medium degree of autonomic nervous symptoms carried out an once a week and totally four weeks’ BMSEG with laughing qigong activity. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods to verify and analyze data of both sets through way of triangulation. The results were as follows: Physically, the participants often yawned, felt hot, and sweated, but lacked stable and consistent changes on autonomic nervous system. Mentally, the participants often felt happy, unfettered, and felicitous. They also felt inhibited, shy, and embarrassed; they even intended to escape from the laughing group. In terms of spirit, almost every participant did not feel deeply inspired or experience obviously changes, but they endorsed the positive belief from the laughing activity. About the interpersonal relationships, almost every participant said they learned and obtained new insight in the process of group sharing and interaction; moreover, they hoped their friendship can last. Conclusion: Applying laughing program in an once a week and a total 4-week BMSEG may contribute to short-term positive experiences as well as changes on body, mind, spirit and interpersonal relationships to those female adults. Laughing activity has its potential effects both in health promotion (physical and mental) and sustainable health development. However, the restriction on space and time should be considered when designed a BMSEG with laughing activity in the future. Furthermore, the individual difference and Chinese cultural influence should also pay more attention.
