長久以來,受壓桿件之研究一直是鋼構學門之探討重點,然而探討之斷面大都限於型鋼斷面(rolled section)、鋼骨鋼筋混凝土(SRC),極少之研究是針對組合斷面(build-up section)。由於缺乏組合斷面之相關研究,1980年代之AISC-ASD (1980)對於組合斷面之設計僅原則性提示組合斷面之組成元件(component element)細長比不得大於桿件(member)之細長比,而1989年之AISC-ASD (1989)對於組合斷面之設計祇是原則提示組合斷面之元件細長比不得大於桿件細長比之0.75倍,這個原則唯一之目的是要防止元件之局部挫屈發生。1986年之AISC-LRFD (1986)才有組合構件正式公式E4-1、E4-2、E4-3,但該等公式仍然非常草率,沒有考慮組成元件之分離比(separation ratio)。1991年Aslani與Goel (1991)首次根據Bleich (1952)之理論公式推導出適用一般邊界條件之通用公式,該公式後來在1993、1999年之AISC-LRFD (1993, 1999)正式被採納。不過在組合構件中有所謂的加入繫板(lacing, batten, plate)的問題,規範規定只要單一的構件細長比不得大於全組合斷面之桿件細長比,此項規定並沒有任何之實驗與理論推導作為依據,直到2002年Duan, Reno and Uang (2002)才針對此一問題做理論之探討,並且提出如果加入繫板(lacing or batten)之組合構件,其單一桿件的細長比必須小於全組合斷面桿件細長比之0.75,此一推論被AISC-LRFD所接受並請顯示在最2005-AISC (2005)規範裡。唯上述Duan, Reno and Uang (2002)之結論,並無任何之實驗根據支持其立論,因此有必要透過實驗探討此一新之規定。
