In recent years, the insurance market in Taiwan has become very competitive due to the government’s liberation policy, as well as growing acceptance of young working people in high-tech companies or dangerous working environments. This study explores the key attributes of purchasing insurance for employees in the panel industry. In Taiwan, high-tech companies occupy 27.61% of the total labor force. Among high-tech companies, the labor force in the panel industry is ranked in the top three. Thus, it is worthwhile to examine the factors influencing the workers’ decisions on insurance purchasing, as well as their preferred insurance types. The study involves the employees of four large panel companies: AUO, CMO, HannStar, and CPT. In addition, we survey two distinct groups of workers: staff members and online workers. The environment of online workers is usually more risky than that of in-office staff members. In our study, we use AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to explore the influential attributes of insurance purchasing. The hierarchical attributes are constructed in three steps: (1) reviewing relevant literature and consulting professionals; (2) designing initial questionnaires, filtering the results via statistical analysis and expert opinion, revising the attributes, and modifying the questionnaires; (3) distributing the questionnaires to the appropriate people and employing EXPERT CHOICE 2000 AHP software to analyze the results. To enhance our study towards a practical situation, we conduct another investigation that incorporates fuzzy set theory with AHP. In the two methods, the attributes’ weight values are different, but their rankings remain the same: for the staff members, the order of importance would be life insurance > health > annuity > injury; for the online workers, however, it would be health insurance > life > annuity > injury.
