By writing women’s individual experiences and plight of the living from a radical and self-conscious standpoint of sex, Lin Bai and Chen Ran were dubbed the exemplary figures of “individualized writing” in the literary circle in Mainland China during the 1990s. By describing women from the physical, sexual and spiritual aspect as well as their plight of the living, they illustrated how unfairly and oppressively women were treated in a patriarchal society, in hopes of unveiling the selfish and cunning side of men as well as revolting against and overthrowing the patriarchy. Through the examination of the feminine consciousness and sentiments illustrated in Lin Bai and Chen Ran’s novels, this thesis organizes the similarities and dissimilarities of “individualized writing” between both authors, elaborates the dilemma and paradox existing in the emotional descriptions about homosexuality, Electra complex/patricide and Oedipus complex/fear of mothers, and explores women’s plight of living elucidated in the novels together with the contemporary social environment in Mainland China, for the purpose of depicting contemporary women’s life in Mainland China after the ‘90s.
