The present study aims to focus on how Yuan Zhu Chih lead the late Qing intellectual's Shanghai description when he first started lived in Shanghai from 1850s. The first part of this essay is focus on Yuan Zhu Chih’s Shanghai experience, and analyze the relation between Yuan Zhu Chih and Shanghai literary circles.The second part is based on the chinese-language newspapers, to find out how Yuan Zhu Chih play important role in change the mindset of intellectuals from opposed to accept the "Shanghai" in literature. The third part is based on Hu You Za Ji (the notes on traveling in Shanghai) and Chong Xiu Hu You Za Ji (the renovation of the notes on traveling in Shanghai), both were introductory books of Shanghai, to inspect how a guidebook constructed an urban impression, by introduce the prohibition, consumer landscape and the time consciousness. Lastly, the perspective on looking the differences between eastern and western culture and the publishing strategy of Tan Ying Lu, wrote by Yuan Zhu Chih when he travel overseas, had shown his motivation for cultural exchange and connecting Shanghai with the world.
