English Abstract

Using an indwelling urinary catheter may cause some adverse effects such as urinary tract infection. Previous studies have shown that bladder training increases the success rate of removal of indwelling urethral catheters. This study reviews the relevant references and information to investigate the effectiveness of bladder training and indwelling urinary catheters in Taiwan. We collected and appraised the relevant sources from a systematic review and guidelines from hospitals. Bladder training may fail to resolve the problems of catheter removal. For solving these problems, we suggest that healthcare workers should focus on patient care as early as possible before and after placing the catheter and removing the catheter. Further studies are warranted to support these findings.
