This thesis describes the use of injection locking techniques to achieve low phase noise performance, and uses it in a frequency synthesizer for 60GHz wireless communication system. The thesis can be divided into three parts to explore.

The first part introduces the concept of phase-locked loop. First we discuss the basic principles of phase locked loop and its sub-circuit, analysis the phase noise of voltage controlled oscillator, and the phase noise and phase accuracy of quadrature VCO would be discussed. The second part will explore the principles of injection locked techniques , and analysis double frequency injection-locked QVCO, while will be applied to the proposed structure of doubler and QVCO. The measurement output frequencies are 5GHz and 10GHz. Their phase noise are-103.36 and -96.82dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1MHz, while phase noise are-106.14 and -99.91 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset frequency by using injection-locked technique. The power consumption is about 32mW. The last part of this thesis presents the frequency synthesizer. It divided into two part of work. The first part describes double frequency injection-locked into frequency synthesizer. The simulation result doubler tuning range at 46.65 G to 51.84 GHz have a phase noise of -91.5dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. The second part improves frequency synthesizer using the multi-band VCO to be suited for wideband operation. The phase noise of QVCO is -100dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset, and it consumes 67mW.
