The odors emitted from industrial factories, wastewater treatment plants, and sanitary landfills may produce adverse effects on the public health as well as welfare. Odors have traditionally been treated using physicochemical processes such as scrubbing, adsorption and oxidation. Recently, biofilters have been proven to be cost-effective for the control of odors from air stream.
This study employs a compost-based air biofilter (a compost/plastic media volume ratio of 60/40) for treating odors from air stream including methyl mercaptan (MM), dimethylsulfide (DMS) and trimethylamine (TMA) under different gas flow rates and influent concentrations. The optimum operating conditions of biofilter to reach efficient performance was thus established.
The inlet concentration ranges of MM, DMS and TMA are 20-30 ppmv, 20- 80 ppmv and 50-150 ppmv, respectively, while the empty-bed residence time (EBRT) range is 30-90 sec. The results show, MM removal efficiency achieved 80% when influent sulfur loading was 4.74 g-S/m3•h. DMS removal efficiency achieved 86% when influent sulfur loading was 11.85 g-S/m3•h. TMA removal efficiency achieved 73% when influent nitrogen loading was 10.37 g-N/m3•h. Carbon recoveries of the three odors achieved >97%, sulfur recoveries for MM and DMS achieved >86 %, and nitrogen recovery of TMA achieved >85 %. This indicated the stable operation in the biofilter and the accuracy of test results.
