Backgrounds and purpose: Functional constipation, also known as chronic idiopathic constipation, has typical symptoms of constipation, but the exact causes remain
unknown. In addition, the prevalence of constipation in women is higher than in men. The clinical treatment and recommendation to improve the symptoms in constipation
patients include higher intake of fibers, supplementation with amounts of water, proper physical activity and stool softener administration. However, few studies have paid
attention to the nutritional status and gastrointestinal hormones in constipation patients. Herein, we focused on the middle-aged women with or without functional constipation to explore and compare the nutritional status and gastrointestinal hormones. Methods: We designed several questionnaires such as Rome III diagnostic criteria,
constipation severity instrument (CSI) scales, dietary habits, nutritional knowledge, subjective global assessment score, 24 h dietary recall, and clinical trial consent. We
then recruited the volunteers with functional constipation and healthy population from outpatient department and nursing staffs. The blood sample collected under fasting
condition was analyzed for biochemical parameters and gastrointestinal hormones. Results: Forty-eight volunteers were enrolled in this study (27 in the normal group and
21 in the constipation group. The CSI scales in the constipation group (34.2 ± 12.0) were significantly higher than those in the normal group (17.9 ± 9.1). In the functional constipation assessment, most parameters, except that of at least 25% of defecations by digital evacuation in the constipation group, were significantly higher in the normal group. In blood biochemical analysis, only the levels of potassium, zinc, and triiodothyronine were significantly higher in the normal group than in the constipation group. The levels of acylated ghrelin and motilin in the normal group were significant higher than those in the constipation. However, there were no statistical differences in dietary habits and nutritional knowledge between the normal and constipation group.
Conclusion: The present results provide some recommendations for clinical treatment and lifestyle modification for constipation patients. However, the sample size in this study is small, and a larger sample size study is needed to confirm these findings.
