Space	"AND" indicates the intertwining of key terms used in a search

St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) has long been used in herbal medicine for the treatment of burns, bruises, swelling, anxiety, and most recently, mild to moderate depression. Previous introductive trials have shown that St. John’s wort could not produce seed through its life cycle grown in Taiwan. Moreover, information regarding the effects of the growing climate on its bioactive compounds and biomass production is very limited. The current study evaluated the effects of different photoperiod on floral induction and seed production. Biomass of field-grown St. John’s wort planted at different crop seasons and harvested at different times was compared. The content of hypericin, pseudohypericin, and hyperforin and the production of bioactive compounds of aerial plant parts were also investigated. The results indicated that both biomass and concentration of bioactive compounds varied considerably among crop seasons and harvested times. St. John’s wort planted between winter and spring in Taichung area can produce more shoot biomass, higher ratooning ability and ratoon production than any other seasons. Maximum dry matter and bioactive compounds production will be reached at 150 days after transplanting on February. The induction of flowering showed that plants formed flower buds and flowered in photoperiods of 16-20 h and light break one hour in the middle of dark phase but not with 14 h or shorter. The critical day length is 16 h. The results showed that extending light period to 17, 19 h or light break treatments can induce normal flowering and produce normal seeds of St. John’s wort grown in Taiwan.
