With advance medical and health technology, the percentage of elder persons in the population worldwide has increased rapidly. As the needs of life satisfaction have become more critical with elder persons, human computer interfaces must meet these needs in the balance between physiological independence and social engagement. The aim of this study is to understand relationship between older users' emotional factors and the degree of satisfaction in human computer interfaces. This study first was to investigate aging process, quality of life, and to define senses of achievement and intimacy as two design factors of human computer interfaces. Then the study was to design two prototypes according to the user interface design guideline. One was with the two design factors, whereas the other was without. After a usability testing, results show that, with no difference in performance, the elderly who interacted with the human computer interfaces with two design factors scored higher in their subjective measures in terms of sense of achievement, sense of intimacy, and usability. The findings of this study suggest that applying affective factors in human computer interfaces should be able to influences elders’ perception about the interaction with interfaces. However, more research is needed to further investigate different types of visual design to convey affective information in human computer interfaces for the elderly.
