Return to Hydraulic Irrigation System Lio-Kong- the Representation of Memorial Sites

This research choosing the the surviving Taipei landscape - Hydraulic Irrigation System Lio-Kong as the subject, aimed to explore how to represent through memory an important cultural asset that encompass the elements of historical context, culture and natural environment, and reconnect the relations and cultural energy between human and nature. In terms of perspective constructions, the study attempted to, with the discourse of memory, scrutinize the contemporary preservation model of culturescapes derived from the “objectivity” of historical consciousness, and seek alternatives as replacement. The study can be categorized into three main sections: (1.)Empirical Research: The study attempted to reestablish an accurate historical portrayal of Hydraulic Irrigation System Lio-Kong by researching relevant literatures and historical data, and to compare it with its contemporary conditions from the field research to: 1)Clarify certain misinformed locations of Hydraulic Irrigation System Liu-Kong and 2) discover the accurate sites or remnants of Hydraulic Irrigation System Lio-Kong. (2.) Theoretical Induction: The purpose of the study was the “representation of space”, and in terms of theoretical analysis, it can be categorized into two sections: 1)Practice of Space: with Henri Lefebvre’s “The Production of Space” as foundation, and incorporating the divergent thinking of “The Third Space” and the spatial properties of “Heterotopia” to define and analysis structures; 2)History and Memories: by employing Henri Bergson and Walter Benjamin’s criticisms of historical consciousness and the operation of memories, connect and weave the relationship among time, space and memory, and draft a discourse of heterotopia that infuses reality and imagination as the fundamental structure and operation for the subsequent chapter which deals with the operation of spatial representation. (3.) Operation Design: By applying the spatial representation theories concluded in the study and with Hydraulic Irrigation System Lio-Kong, an unique site discovered during the field research, as the subject, the author answered, reawaken the values of cultural landscapes to both human beings and natural environment. The study aimed not at presenting the preservation methodologies of culturescapes, but rather to encourage one to rethink the spatial imagination and practices of contemporary culturescapes by interpreting the represented space, to return to the essence of culturescapes via the representation of memorial sites; to reflect on the significance and inspiration of represented memory on contemporary society in order to construct venues possessing multiple imaginations and possibilities by discovering more incidents and sentiments buried within these locations.
