The objectives of this study are to investigate the degree of duplication of medical periodical holdings among Formosa Plastics Group libraries as well as the research supporting capability provided by the medical periodical holdings to the research of professors of the College of Medicine, Chang Gung University. The periodical articles authorized by these professors and published between 2003 and 2005 are collected. Using bibliometrics and citation analyses, the list of periodicals referenced in these articles are complied and compared with the holding lists of Formosa Plastics Group libraries. The conclusions of the study are: first, medical periodical holdings among the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries are highly duplicated. Secondly, the average number of references cited in periodical articles by professors of the College of Medicine, Chang Gung University, is 31.6. And majority of the references are of periodical articles. Thirdly, there are 26 core periodicals can be identified from references cited. In addition, among different departments, core periodicals are quite unique. The following results are concluded by comparing the periodicals list of the references with the holding lists. Fourthly, by periodical tittles and years of publication, 66.3% of the references can be supplied from the holdings of the Chang Gung University library, 80.7% of the references can be supplied from the combined holdings of the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries, and only 19.3% of the references have to come from holdings other than the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries. Fifthly, by periodical tittles only, 83.0% of the references can be supplied from the holdings of the Chang Gung University library, 89.8% of the references can be supplied from the combined holdings of the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries, and only 11.1 % of the references have to come from holdings other than the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries. Sixthly, by periodical tittles, 58.2% of the periodicals listed in the references are also in the holdings of the Chang Gung University library, 70.7% of the which can be found in the combined holdings of the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries, and 29.3 % of which have to come from holdings other than the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries. Seventhly, all the core periodical titles are within holdings of the Chang Gung University library and of the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries. Suggestions for improving the services of the Formosa Plastics Group Libraries as followed: Firstly, the core collection of medical periodicals should be constantly maintained to fulfill the research needs of professors of Chang Gung University. Secondly, a formal collection policy should be established in the Chang Gung University Library to improve collection and services. Thirdly, a strategy of cooperative collection development should be explicitly defined among Formosa Plastics Group libraries. Fourthly, while maintaining collections collectively providing strong supply to the enterprise, it is also recommended to reduce duplication and establish the uniqueness of each individual library collection. Fifthly, a metasearch system cross institute libraries should be installed to reduce repeatedly search time.
