Body Images of Junior High School Students in Taichung A Master Thesis by Li-Chiung, Wang Abstract This study was sought to examine related degrees between sociocultural factors and body images for adolescents. Through stratified cluster random sampling, the study group was composed of students from 12 classes in Ching-Shui junior high school in Taichung. They completed self-administered questionnaires that examined relations between sociocultural factors and body images, which followed the measuring method revealed in the revised Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire. 451 effective questionnaires were counted in this study. The essential results were discovered as follows: 1.The study group showed unbiased grades in body image evaluation. In body image orientation, however, the grades were higher, especially in the aspects of appearance and overweight comparing with diet habits. 2.Females evaluated themselves worse on appearance, body-area satisfaction and self-classified weight than males did. On the other hand, they concerned more about appearance and overweight. 3.Overweight individuals evaluated themselves worse on body-area satisfaction and self-classified weight than normal and underweight ones did. Besides, overweight individuals put the largest concern on overweight. On appearance, however, there is no significant difference among these three groups. 4.Sociocultural factors such as televisions, peers and parents indicated significant correlations with body image orientation. 5.Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis revealed that sociocultural factors reached 12.2﹪and 30.7﹪explanation respectively on variances in body image evaluation and body image orientation. The most influential element was “the peer teasing” in body image evaluation, while it was “the pressure from television” in body image orientation. Suggestions toward education strategies on body image were made. Besides, to analyze the strategies used in television impacts will be important for health educators in future studies.
