The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of learning-goal orientation (LGO) and cultural intelligence (CQ) on individuals’ cross-cultural adjustment with the moderating effect of family support. The researcher collected data from Taiwanese expatriates living and working in Vietnam. A pilot test was completed by 30 expatriates to ensure the reliability of the instrument, and the result was acceptable. The total amount of valid questionnaire through the Internet were 231 copies and the percentage for valid return questionnaire was 81.6%. The researcher adopted hierarchical regression to analyze the data and to test the effects of LGO on CQ and cross-cultural adjustment after controlling for gender, age and duration of stay in Vietnam, respectively. In addition, the researcher examined the mediation effect of CQ on the relationship between LGO and cross-cultural adjustment. Also, the researcher investigated the moderation effect of family support on the relationship between CQ and cross-cultural adjustment. The results demonstrated that LGO was an essential determinant of an individual’s CQ and CQ had a positive effect on individual’s cross-cultural adjustment. Moreover, the researcher found that LGO had a positive effect on general, interaction and work adjustment, and CQ mediated the relationship between LGO and general, interaction and work adjustment. In addition, the outcome indicated that family support moderated the relationship between CQ and interaction adjustment. Our findings contribute new knowledge to the field of cross-cultural studies. The findings indicate that learning-goal orientation may be the predictor of one’s CQ. Furthermore, the present study discovered that individuals with a strong learning motivation, cultural learning ability and family support would adjust better to an unfamiliar environment, so those elements can help individuals to adapt effectively to a different culture.
